The United Kingdom Electronic Travel Authorisation (UK ETA) is a new digital entry system introduced by the UK Home Office to enhance border security and simplify travel procedures for foreign visitors. The ETA is an electronic document that allows eligible travelers to enter or transit through the UK without applying for a traditional visa, provided they meet the required conditions. It forms part of the UK’s plan to fully digitalize its border by 2025, making travel smoother, faster, and more secure.

The UK ETA is mandatory for travelers from visa-exempt countries, such as the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) nations — including Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Bahrain, Oman, and Kuwait — as well as other countries that will be added in phases. Travelers who already hold a valid UK visa or have British or Irish citizenship do not need to apply for an ETA.

To be eligible for the UK ETA, travelers must hold a valid biometric passport, intend to stay in the UK for short visits (up to 6 months) for purposes such as tourism, business, medical treatment, or short study, and have no immigration violations or criminal history that would affect entry. Applicants must complete the ETA form online, provide personal details, passport information, and travel plans, and pay a small processing fee.

Once approved, the ETA is digitally linked to the traveler’s passport and remains valid for multiple short visits over a specified period (typically two years or until the passport expires). The ETA ensures quicker processing at UK borders and supports a secure, contactless entry system for millions of visitors each year.
